How to run PiAware and still use the RPI for other things also?

I am running a Raspberry Pi 3B using the operating system provided by FlightAware. Everything seems to be working good. My question is I just turned my expensive RPI 3 into a single purpose brick. I want to be able to use it to run other things simultaneously. How can I get to a usable GUI? I can’t seem to get out of the initial PiAware boot screen.

If this is possible, please explain it as simple as you can as I am a new Pi user.
Thanks!

The PiAware sdcard image is aimed at being a pre-set-up single-purpose image. You can certainly add stuff to it, but it gets complicated.

For general-purpose use I’d suggest starting with a standard Raspberry Pi OS image of your choice (Raspberry Pi OS – Raspberry Pi) then installing the dump1090 and piaware packages (PiAware - dump1090 ADS-B integration with FlightAware - FlightAware) to do the ADS-B part.

Guide that should work with any Raspbian base image (or debian / ubuntu base system):

Thanks for the advice. I re-flashed the card with the standard pi operating system and then added PiAware secondly, and it all works perfect now. I feel better knowing I can still use my Pi for other applications while PiAware is running in the background.
Thanks again all!

Otherwise you need to set the location to get MLAT running.
