After trying to get airport ID changed unsuccessfully, Sioux City officials will now build a marketing campaign around their airport identifier.
They were able to get it changed - even though there was no compelling reason (e.g. safety) to do so - but they didn’t like the ones offered to them.
Sioux City officials petitioned the Federal Aviation Administration to change the code in 1988 and 2002. At one point, the FAA offered the city five alternatives GWU, GYO, GYT, SGV and GAY but airport trustees turned them down.
At least they are making the most of their code.
“Let’s make the best of it,” (airport board member Dave) Bernstein said. "I think we have the opportunity to turn it into a positive.
It could be worse - they could have passengers that have a code of FAT on their luggage tags.

Has it always been SUX? What did the airport officials propose? Al Haynes and Co. would agree with SUX. I’ve flown in there and thought it was a nice airport with large concrete runways.
Duluth is DUH. I thought that was funny.
Rapid city is KRAP.
