It’s not technically aviation, but it is “flying” so I didn’t know where to post this. Fossett’s car, which he hoped to break a land-speed record in, prior to his death is up for sale. Powered by a GE J-79 Turbojet, it has over 18,400 lbs of thrust and a thrust to weight ration of 2:1, it could be capable of over 1000 mph. And all for a cool 4 mill:
Edit: Men’s Journal, through which I found this link, said that the asking price is about $4 million. The link actually says “over 4 million invested - serious offers are invited”. In today’s market, what’s a serious offer?
I’m thinking of getting it for a commuter car for work. You know - for days that I’m running a little bit behind. It says it has a 105 gal fuel tank. Any idea’s on how long that will feed that engine? 1-2 minutes maybe?
right on. So a little less than 3 mins then. Still, at 1000 mph, that’ll get you 45 miles and at 800 mph, that’s 36 miles. I could almost get to work and back on one tank of gas - almost. Thanks for the formula - haven’t seen that one before.
Wait - did you edit your post? The calc’s are different now.
Okay - well either way, between about 1-4 minutes, depending on if your a lead foot or not. Not exactly prius caliber, but I could work with it.
It might be worth it for the commute in DC from I95 to I275 toward Frederick that stretch of I 275 from the south into frederick would be fun to make with this machine.
