I'm old and cranky

Being retired often provides too much time to dwell on things. Sorry.

Here are a couple of things on the status page that could to be rethought or fixed.

The page load time is at the very top of the page. Below the map is the line that usually says, “Last updated less than a minute ago.” While this may be true, it is valid for only a moment. Please consider moving the page load time down to this position and change the text. Now, I realize that the time I load the page is different from when the server refreshed the data. That said, couldn’t these references be combined into something like “Page loaded at HH:MM with data from HH:MM” ?

The Hourly Graphs time line is delineated starting at 00 am to 22 pm. AM and PM are not necessary when expressing hours in a 24 hour format. Just for consistency, couldn’t both time references on the page be in one format or the other (12 or 24 hour)?

OK, thanks for listening. Time for a nap. Or a beer. Where are my keys?

Keys on the bedside table, next to the church key. G’nite

FA has responded to one of my posts that they know of many improvements that could be made to the main page. It’s probably a matter of resources for them.

I have pointed out that in the recent flights section, distance from station is reported in statute miles when the user-chosen units are nautical miles.

I also am baffled by the hourly activity grid seeming to be an hour off or the x-axis label being misplaced. For example, 6 pm gets filled in at 5 pm or something similar. Not sure about the standard and summer time switchover.

We definitely read the forums and we have a place for feature requests.

We rank the bugs and features depending on importance so it is hard to say when something will be fixed.

Most pages on the website are rendered from multiple data queries. I don’t know the specifics where those two pieces of information are gathered but it actually might be hard to do or very easy to do.

There are probably two reasons you will see the stats hourly off.

  1. The hourly graph uses your local time set in your user preferences. Maybe you set your local time to another time zone or a timezone without daylight savings time?
  2. The stats server is not real-time. The data from the ADSB sites are processed immediately for the live site, but the stats are sent to be processed later. During off hours when not many positions are coming in the stats are extremely close to real-time, but during busy times it can get a few minutes behind. I don’t think I have seen the stats server off by more than 15 minutes even during very busy times.

… let’s a third reason:

  1. An error in writing the page code.

To illustrate this, at about 3:02pm a fresh page from FA showed the 3 to 4pm block just filled in with “65/5”. Well there have not been 5 flights reported since 3 pm. That is what happened between 2 and 3pm.

It is possible I have incorrectly entered my time zone but I doubt it since this anomaly has been with me over 3 or more installations of PiAware. My preference would be what OP wrote. This graphic should be in UTC and labelled from 0 to 23.

Dave, we know you do and I think I speak for the majority when I say that we truly appreciated it. Thanks for pointing out that other forum. This is really the only forum I read here at flightaware.com so I wasn’t aware of it.

Also, I hope you read my post in the light vein that I was trying to project.

We are aware of and tracking this issue. An overall refresh of the “My ADS-B” section of the web site is on our roadmap and will include a variety of enhancements and fixes. Please stay tuned for updates.
