Did you have the Skyaware Anywhere page open ? this increases the count due to a higher reporting rate.
I typically don’t use it but might have inadvertently had it open in a browser tab yesterday.
Based on the stats it must have been open from 8am-4pm as that’s where the higher reporting occurred.
that’s why I asked, these times are usually working hours
I still call this “odd” that opening that site increases the values in the stats.
If you look at the logs you can see the request to increase the reporting rate to 3 times the normal speed. So more reports ( and positions) are sent.
I know how it works, but just because it’s reported three times more often it should not impact the remote stats. That’s not logical
Ran a test today where i had the Skyaware Anywhere page open for 30 Minutes only
The chart goes ridiculously through the roof. That’s really bad…
The red line is the real path of the hourly collection today
Might not be for you, but that’s what happens.
They are both “real”. The Skyaware is instructed to send more data out. I guess some of it gets discarded normally (similar packets).
I have a different opinion, but i can deal with it: Don’t trust any stats you didn’t create by yourself
Who created those then? Santa?
To me it’s just removing a server-side limitation.
Similarly, but in opposite direction, when you “disable MLAT” you actually instruct piaware to reduce the number or positions per second sent to servers and the stats of “positions” will go down.
In all the cases, the number of planes “seen” remains the same.
But indeed, it’s everyone’s preference!
Too much honor for me, but i am not Santa.
If i would have created the stats, i would have filtered it out.
I’ve seen a significant increase in the past week, but it’s unrelated to my sky-anywhere usage. If I close the Sky Aware Anywhere, there’s no change in the reporting (that I can tell, anyway).
However, I’ve also seen an increase in the number of flights reported and the range where I’m picking up flights, so I’m wondering if there was local interference on the ADS-B spectrum in my area that’s since gone away?
I tend to agree with @fhmiii - nothing to do with Sky Anywhere
At my location in the last few days I’ve seen a considerable increase in numbers & range due to Tropo ducting caused by high pressure. Plus, no doubt, a Christmas getaway for the lucky few!
Looking on your stats page it’s maybe the typical pre-christmas traffic?
My receiver here in Germany is also getting an increased number since a couple of days.
How is it if you compare it to other nearby stations? That might give you also an indication where it comes from.
Looking at several of my nearby stations, there has been a recent bump in positions, and that’s correlated with an increase in traffic… but only one other has seen a 30-ish percent increase in positions like I have in that time. Most stations have seen about 10-12% increase in aircraft and a corresponding increase in positions. Mine and one other station has seen a 10-12% increase in aircraft and a 25-35% increase in positions since 12/16.
I restarted the PiAware and now I’ve seen a dramatic drop in positions and aircraft. I’m thinking that there may be something about the recency of a reboot that causes the gain to increase or decrease, resulting in a change in positions reported? Could that be the case?
I’m going to install SSH and see if I can play with the gain settings to improve my reception.
It’s unlikely but not impossible.
You should check the syslog for piaware.
sudo journalctl -u piaware -e -n 20000
It reports higher rate for skyaware anywhere i think.
Install local statistics to have another datapoint?

I was going to set up SSH and start working on getting this kind of stuff added to my feeder over the weekend.
