Significant Decrease in Positions Reported to FA

Interesting observation: As of 26 FEB 2022, all four (4) of my FlightAware ADS-B receivers experienced a reduction by 1/2 of the positions reported to FlightAware. Prior to 2/26/22, the receivers were consistently sending 250-300K positions/day; but, after 2/26/22, the receivers rarely exceed 150K. There was no change in antenna placement or the receiving equipment… everything has remained static. Neighboring monitors have not seen these reduced levels. Just a curious observation.

Positions reported to FA from another of my ADS-B receivers. Again… note the change on 2/26/2022. (This one went from 350K to 150K.)

Kevin,

Could you have new electronics in the house interfering, or water in the coax? I agree the dip is odd.

Could you have had the “Skyaware anywhere” page open in any web browser before the change? Having that page open can easily double your reported positions.

Since that page combines all of your receivers in one view, I could see how all of them would drop off at the same time when the page was closed.

No sir… nothing has changed on my end… all static.

No… I do not browse from the Raspberry Pis… only the SDR dongle.

You don’t have to be browsing from the Pi. Accessing that web page - from any computer will (effectively) cause the FlightAware servers to tell your Pis to update more frequently.

There is a pretty big thread on the subject here, I will edit with a link as soon as I go find it.

Here’s one: Unusual 30% increase in positions reported 12/16/2021

I don’t think that’s the cause of this issue.

I’m seeing a similar drop as well on some of my recievers on the exact same date ( it’s not on all recievers).
Other possible cause could be a change in the pattern towards an airport and then getting less postions of an aircraft.

If it was Skyaware anywhere normally you would see a in the logs an entry report that the upload rate increased by 3.0 times but that log entry has also not be seen since 26/2.
Same when you close Skyaware anywhere the you would get a log entry that it had decreased to 1.0

The number of aircraft stays the same but the position reports are down.

Maybe the increased log reporting has been disabled due to the conflict in the Ukraine but only FA staff could respond to that

EXACTLY! The number of planes seen has remained fairly constant, but the number of positions has dropped by half…

@obj are you able to tell if there have been changes in the reporting rate since 26/2 ?

Prior to Feb. 26, 2022, all of my FlightAware ADS-B receivers were reporting to FA (on average) 250-350K positions per day. On Feb 26, 2022, all receivers began forwarding only 100-150K positions per day. Oddly, the number of planes seen has remained fairly constant. There was no change in RPi/SDR/coaxial cable/antenna placement, no extra equipment placed in the room… everything remained static. And since Feb. 26, I no longer see the 350-400K levels of positions being reported to FA… but remain fairly “flat” around 150K positions (as shown in the FA graphic).

Another FA feeder (tomvdhorst) also reported a similar drop on some of his receivers on the exact same date (see comment above).

Wait for obj to respond, he’s part of the flightaware staff. If there’s something he can share or has an answer to I’m sure he will give a response. Pushing it doesn’t speed things up

Sorry… I thought @obj had responded, but I don’t see the comment now…

I don’t think we changed anything on our side around then.
