Is there any way of getting labels to appear next to aircraft displayed on the map showing Reg, altitude etc. as in FR24 or is the only way by hovering the cursor over the aircraft?

That is not currently a feature of Skyview. Skyview supports hover and click on the icon.
You could also install Opensource Virtual Radar Server and hook that up to show what you are after.
