There were some severe storms over KDTW throughout the whole day yesterday. Aircraft were put into two major holding patterns. The first was the one you saw and the second was a few miles southeast of the airport.
Oh thanks for that. So do you live near there or is that you favorite airport to watch?
Yeah I live in Northville, about 30 mins NW of KDTW.
Oh thats chill. So is Northwest your airline to watch??
Well, Northwest is pretty much all you see around here. So I guess you could say that.
But there’s 747’s right i wish the airport here had things like that. We mostly see RJ’s and some 320’s.
Depending on the weather, I’ll occasionally see a 747 over my house. Most are smaller, however. The most common aircraft I see are Northwest Airlink Saab 340s and Northwest A319s. Also common are Northwest Airlink Avros and Northwest 757s.
Oh sounds chill. Better then what i see.
There may have been storms, but this looks like a very typical route for ORD->DTW. A combination of prevailing winds and traffic (Chicago Bradford and Kokomo approaches are very busy) likely make a northeast route to the DTW POLAR1 more favorable.
Edit to add THIS:
Route Analysis Summary
Frequency Origin Destination Altitude Full Route
26 KORD KDTW 23000 PETTY MKG POLAR1
17 KORD KDTW 25000 PETTY MKG POLAR1
ALL recent routes ORD->DTW have flown this route (from the FA IFR Route Analysis)
jreeves, you’re looking at the most recent flight. The flight we are referring to is this one: flightaware.com/live/flight/NWA1 … /KORD/KDTW
Notice the holding pattern. The original post’s link is out of date, that’s all.
Ah yes, the 'ol history vs live link trick.
Carry on.
