Help debugging new ADS-B build

Hi, new build here and I’m struggling with what might be bad hardware - but I’m hoping that you can help.

The current build is on Raspian Bullseye + Piaware + Dump1090-fa, though I had the same problems using the image distributed by Flightaware, as well.

Everything appears to have installed OK, but I’m stuck with not getting any actual data. See below and notice that the dump1090 is NOT producing data on localhost:30005 - that’s where I’m stuck.

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ piaware-status
PiAware master process (piaware) is running with pid 599.
PiAware ADS-B client (faup1090) is running with pid 644.
PiAware ADS-B UAT client (faup978) is not running (disabled by configuration settings)
PiAware mlat client (fa-mlat-client) is not running.
Local ADS-B receiver (dump1090-fa) is running with pid 342.

dump1090-fa (pid 342) is listening for ES connections on port 30005.
faup1090 is connected to the ADS-B receiver.
piaware is connected to FlightAware.

dump1090 is NOT producing data on localhost:30005.

Your feeder ID is <redacted> (from /var/cache/piaware/feeder_id)

This is the kit available from Flightaware with the Pi-Zero, antenna, RTL/SDR, etc …

Ideas? Or given that his has happened consistently across two separate installs, should I presume bad hardware and seek a replacement?

Might have a bad antenna.

You have a small uninsulated paper-clip?
That can be used as a make-shift antenna directly in the SMA connector of the SDR.
(straighten the paper-clip, carefully without force place one end into the SMA connector, cut it so that 6.7 cm stick out of the connector, place the SDR vertical.)

Anyhow … before such things…

Where is the antenna / rpi?
Make a picture maybe?

Install this: GitHub - wiedehopf/graphs1090: Graphs for readsb / dump1090-fa / dump1090 (based on dump1090-tools by mutability)
And after letting it run half an hour copy the picture from the 2 hour signal graph.
