The FlightAware App on my Samsung S5 stopped working. I thought it was possibly outdated so I installed the latest version from Google Play. The results are the same. If I try to view any N number or airport the app searches briefly and then says “No flights found”. When I try to log in it says “Communication error”. Everything else on this phone works fine. No network issues with any other app.
FlightAware on my iPhone 10 works perfectly as does FlightAware on my PC, so it is not my login account that is at fault.
Has FlightAware dropped support for older Android phones?
The max OS version on an s6 appears to be 6. Marshmallow
The statement on play store specifically says ‘this version supports 9+’ and requires ( but they’ve made an error and flagged the app base as 6+ still…)
I would say with the changes in permission and socket methods you may now be stuck.
Fr24 has also incremented min versions.
Basically old OS are open to exploits and security holes. Built on different framework that mean more work to keep coding for so many changes and decreased numbers on handsets being used. So more and more don’t want to be ‘that guy’
The app stopped working on my Galaxy S7 also. I need it because I pick up family about 15-20 times a year. I had to start using the Flightaware website on Google Chrome on my phone. A little more of a pain than using the app but it gets the job done. I am really sick and tired of being forced to “upgrade” and turn in my phone. I don’t have a want or a need to have the latest and greatest phone, or the latest an greatest anything for that mater. I have no use for people that judge other people based on material things like that and the world would be a better place if they would just go sit on it and rotate.
You can actually blame Google and Apple for this as much as any developers. While Microsoft provides some measure of backward-compatibility, such that with the right settings you can run programs developed for DOS, iOS and Android limit their systems to just a few versions of backward compatibility.
When they “sunset” an older version of the OS, often the way the older apps work breaks as well. System or network requests that used to be standard now cause errors and introduce instability. The app stores won’t allow them to furnish the older versions, and so your updated apps don’t work on your older devices. That, or you end up with broken apps in your updated OS if the developer is unable to update.
I cannot login on the app on my brand new Samsung S24 Ultra. I also receive a connection error. I can log in to the website on my phone without a problem, so it’s definitely an app problem.
Thanks. Tried it out in the wild with my cellular connection and I still receive the communication error. Not using any VPN or special DNS, either. Weird.
The issue must be in your phone settings because FlightAware for Android does not have any network settings. Have you tried reinstalling FlightAware on your S24 and making a new user id?
After removing the app, rebooting my phone, and reinstalling, I get “unable to create user account” if i attempt to make a new account.
All of my phone settings are set to factory default as they were out of of the box, so I’m not sure what I’d need to change. I have hundreds of apps on my phone and this is the only one that doesn’t work. No idea what’s going on
Apparently i cannot post screenshots (another error haha).
I was able to register just now as a new user by using my wife’s email address.
So, I think my problem is resolved, but clearly there is some larger issue if creating a new account was the only solution. My old account shouldn’t break because I got a new phone.
But thank you for taking the time to help me, I appreciate it.
