Been a user of the FlightAware iOS app for years. Just opened it and got a screen saying the app will no longer work on my phone (despite it working just recently) and moreover after checking the support page, it looks like I have to buy a new phone to continue to use FlightAware. This is absolutely bonkers. A handful of other iOS apps I use have stopped providing updates for iOS 15, but none of them prevent the existing app from continuing to work. Totally unacceptable for a serious iOS developer. I encourage FlightAware’s development team to consider retaining backwards compatibility, or at least don’t deliberately block old versions from working. This is only two major versions back–it’s not that hard, guys.
I ought to shut down my feeder. I don’t know why I’d support FlightAware with data if they’re kicking me off the app.
With the last device supported being 8 years ago. And support of that ending 5 years ago.
I’m surprised it’s alive at all.
Developers will always protect themselves from potential exploits. And difference in security requirements required for later device/versions to function as the makers push the requirements. Which may not be a feature on older.
That usually comes with market share/usage stats they see vs cost/effor to maintain.
The pop-up hides it, but theres been a big ol plummet.
Yea, I get why they stop issuing updates for old devices. I used to be an iOS developer, too, and at some point you need to move ahead with the code and gracefully shift support to newer devices. But I’ve never seen an existing app, already installed on your phone, suddenly change to block the user with a full-screen modal. Not even my banking apps do this, so security is not a good excuse. Apps should continue to work as-installed after receiving their final update. I’ve never seen an app intentionally tell 1 in 11 of their users to go away like this.
Hi,
