One thing I have learned in my life is never take on someone older by āplaying dirty.ā Believe me, I have done and seen it all in my life when it comes to playing dirtyā¦especially after 5 years in a fraternity house, being a part of a D-I football team staff, and a pro team staff.
You couldāve simply posted a link to the Deltaās Web site and gotten the message across very easily.
You strike me as a very smart young man, but you often come across as a āsmart-assā. It seems to me that you could share your vast knowledge with people a lot easier if every reply didnāt contain a āknow-it-allā type commentary. Youād have more time to answer more peopleās ādumb questionsā, still show off your knowledge AND be a more likable person at the same timeā¦
You couldāve simply posted a link to the Deltaās Web site and gotten the message across very easily.
Yes, I could have. But then the person wouldnāt know how to look it when a similar question arose. I believe in the āgive a man fish ⦠teach a man to fishā¦ā philosophy.
Okay, I could have said it more tactfully, Right? Um, let me think about that. Naw, I think I prefer sarcasm and cutting wit to tactfulness.
Hey, Pike, thanks for defending me. At least, I think you were defending me. In any case, just call be BB.
If this was a popularity contest, both yāallās FlightAware registrations wouldāa been rejected from the git-go!!! Damn! You probably wouldnāt have Internet access for that matter!
But seriously⦠I believe in the āteach a man to fishā philosophy too. I also believe in āThe Golden Ruleā too. You can teach a man to fish and be nice about it too. ā¦Or not - your call.
I just feel itās better to treat people with respect rather than try to compensate for some deep-rooted complex of insecurities.
You only got it right (the 2nd )
Ladies and Gentlemen: We have ourselves a winner! * DING * - * DING * - * DING *
I just feel itās better to treat people with respect rather than try to compensate for some deep-rooted complex of insecurities.
I just get tired of people not thinking for themselves. In my deep research of the Internet (approximately 0.43 minutes), Iāve found that a lot of people take the easy way out by asking others to (directly or indirectly) do research for them.
If a person gets a non-nice (in your opionion, I consider it to be sarcastic) reply, he (she, it, them, they, whatever) is (are) more likely to remember it then a mampy-pamby reply.
That was WEAK. My 6 month old son could have come up with that one. 1 point for the slam, MINUS 10 points for originalityā¦
Anyway, as amazing as this sounds, I agree with damirossā¦
The sarcasm and ānon-niceā posts come not with the need to ācompensate for some deep-rooted complex of insecuritiesā but for the intolerance of the lack of initiative to find out on your (your being collective) own.
What is the internet most known forā¦aside from porn since I know somone would have put that in? It is known as one of THE most accessible means of learning new information. Typically, the first place I head if I donāt know something is 1)Google, 2) Wikipedia, 3) what I am looking for info on.com. If it has to do with the company, finding their website is #1.
Pretty much, I am following the idea of āask a stupid question, get a smart ass answer.ā Now, since we live in such a wonderful cough PC world, stupid should be āthought imparedā.
All damiross and I are asking (among others that I have received PM from) is that if you are looking for answers to airlines, especially a specific airline GO FIND IT YOURSELFā¦TAKE SOME INITIATIVE. If, and only if, you have exhausted all of you resources and still donāt have the answer, then ask. There are questions that, no matter how many different ways you put it into Google, you donāt find any info on. I admit this, and many times I can tell which ones they are. A perfect example is the HI-ILS question. That was a very well thought out question.
Polls like āBest Threadā, āFavorite Airlineā are slightly good topic starters, but all in all, a waste. I DID like the āTurboprop vs Eclipseā poll because that can be very informational if someone is going to make a purchase, especially those types of purchases being easily $1+ million.
Anyway, in my case, like I told a different poster earlier, āif I donāt make fun of you, it means I donāt like youā THIS IS A VERY GENERAL STATEMENT!!! DO NOT TAKE IT LITERALLY!!!
What is the internet most known forā¦aside from porn
Thereās porn on the Internet? I didnāt know that, he asked innocently.
Good reply, Pika. You said it better than I could have. Like you, my first instinct to find out something is to use my personal library. I use mainly Google (for general questions) and imdb.com (internet movie database) for movies and TV. Between these two, I find 99% of what Iām looking for.
Itās not that hard, folks. Personally, I get more satisfaction out of researching an answer myself rather than asking others, although I will do the latter if I canāt find what I need.
I can appreciate where youāre coming from, really. I work in computer tech support and Iāve seen it all. There are those that just find the technological aspect of everything so overwhelming that it scares them! Others try hard, but canāt quite seem to get it, some who just donāt have the time (and yes who WONāT take the time) to learn.
God knows IāVE had a few moments where some things simply just didnāt āclickā at the right time. Some people call them āsenior momentsā, otherās call them āblonde momentsā (it really sucks to be old and blonde).
Beating someone over the head while teaching them to fish can cause bad memories of fishing, and may make them very reluctant to fish - which can effectively cause them to starve themselves to death! Or they may pickup hunting instead - on their own - without guidance⦠and God only know WHAT the consequences of that might be I prefer to leave them with good memories of fishing.
Most of the time, if you just say something like, āWell I went to Google.com and searched āairplaneā and āLindbergā and found that it was āThe Spirit of St. Louisāā⦠that usually gets the gears turning a little.
After 10 or 12 times or so, then itās time to ream 'em good!
Why waitā¦like the underage blood alcohol laws in most statesā¦ZERO TOLERANCE
Well, I guess I could be like some of the lefty-loosy states and let it slide once or twiceā¦
Speaking of letting people slide, I am proud to say that I have let Newbies slide on things like thisā¦ONCE.
I personally subscribe to the school of self-realizationā¦
How many times do you really need to tell someone not to touch a hot stove (little kids are excluded) or hold a lit firecracker (crackheads & morons are excluded) in their hands after they have already done it???
The person could be new to the Internet. Hard as it may be to believe, there are still people out there that are plugging-in for the first time. And, hard as it may seem to believe, Google may NOT be the first site they visit. More than likely, MSN.com or Dell.com is their first exposure to the Web. They may have stumbled on to FlightAware from a news link there. FlightAware could possibly be the spark to kindle someoneās passion for flight⦠only to be shot-down in flames by an intolerant know-it-all - crashing and burning in a heap of twisted metal⦠moving over to GunsAndAmmo.com instead!
See, now you have just resorted to name calling. I have never said, nor admitted to āknow-it-allā and if you look at some of my previous posts, you will clearly see that I am very tolerantā¦to a point, especially with newbiesā¦
As far as āstumbling on FAā through a news link, there is a very slim chance that someone would find said link in a story unless they were looking for aviation stories. FA is NOT mentioned in every aviation article, good or bad. Yes, their exposure is growing by leaps and bounds, which is awesome. Hearing about FA by word of mouth would more than likely come from someone who knows about aviation, which, in the vast majority of circles, would mean the person they are talking to has some interest in aviation. Other than those two sources, they would only realistically find this site by using a search engine.
Google is MY preference. There is also ask.com, lycos.com, yahoo.com, msn.com, aol.com, etc. No matter which one you use, you will get the same info, just typically in a different order. Dell.com? Please, that is just a ābuy more stuff from usā page along with some good info on their new 'puter.
Actually, the āknow-it-allā reference was more directed toward damiross, and I did not mean to directly call him as such, rather I meant his remarks come across that way. I did not mean to offend anyone and I apologize if it came out that way.
As far as stumbling across flightaware, yep - a very slim chance: networkworld.com/news/2006/0 ⦠rvers.html
but a chance nonetheless. Eventually these discussion threads may be picked up by google, and then when people search for āNASA Testsā, discussions.flightaware.com/viewtopic.php?t=1387 . The more that is said here in these forums, the more chances of flightaware building exposure. Oh - uh I first learned about it by googling āflight trackingā to learn the status of a friendās flight. More and more people are learning that they can get instant live updates on flights that loved ones are taking.
I personally prefer Yahoo.com so I can read various headlines during the day and keep informed of whatās going on in the world. If I donāt get what I want there, then Iāll google around a bit. I rarely find a need to go to lycos, ask or webcrawler. The point I was making with dell.com is that more than likely, with a new computer, their first exposure to the Web will be determined by what brand of computer they get or what store they bought it from. And itāll typically be quite some time before they learn that the page can be changed - and even longer before they actually learn how to do it! It is a very rare person whose first exposure to the Internet is Google.com. And it may take some people a while to learn about all of the common sites we take for granted every day.
So donāt be too quick to judge others, and be a little less harsh when first doing so.
