Ubuntu X86/64 Install

Sorry guys. Gotta bail and get the siblings from school. Really appreciate your responses, advice and patience. Will have another look at it when time permits.

@vk5mw

Take care NOT to use this command:
sudo dump1090-fa

Use this command:
sudo systemctl restrat dump1090-fa

Reason:
Every time you issue commamd sudo dump1090-fa, it starts a new instance of dump1090-fa even if another instance is already running. As the dongle is already in use by first instance, the new instance fails with usb claim error 6.

On the otherhand the command with systemctl restart first stops any running instance, and then start a new instance, so there is alway only one instance running, and there is no usb claim error 6.

Sorry, I may have confused you with another poster. I can’t find the thread that I am thinking of right now, but someone has said several times that they don’t like Ubuntu and prefer Debian because it boots faster or some such.

Edit: This is the comment that I was remembering: Linux LapTop - #3 by abcd567

Yes, I said it, but it was preference based on performance (speed), not a dislike for Ubuntu,.

Apart from speed, I otherwise prefer Ubuntu over Debian, and for last 10 years have my desktop dual boot (Windows/Ubuntu).

I have installed 18.04 and everything related to piaware using the above mentioned @abcd567 abcd567 guide and it works. Afte rthat I have added airpsy_adsb support for my Airspy Mini.

Yes the signature fails, but that doesn’t hurt anything.
And after that first boot, one can upgrade easily - actually the Ubuntu graphical will download and install updates right at the first start.

Warning - one of the newer kernels didn’t boot on one of my laptops, I had to instruct Grub to use a previous kernel.
