Is there a setting for how close points must be for the actual range outline to be drawn between them?
I get a few flights at close to maximum range (~200NM) but there are gaps in the signals, so the outline is very spiky (pic). It would be good in this situation (very low flight density) to be able to join the dots.
I disagree.
It’s not unlikely you just have obstacles in that direction.
No.
You’ll have to change the source and recompile.
Good day, i’ll even point you at the code:
https://github.com/wiedehopf/readsb/blob/dev/readsb.h#L328C9-L328C27
#define RANGEDIRS_BUCKETS 360
Thank you - that does answer my question. I’m going to post some more information anyway just in case anyone is interested
I have an uninterrupted view to the horizon over about 20°, the blue outline is whatsupthere’s range for an altitude of 30,000ft. The only flights that show up to the south are flights between Sydney and Santiago, and occasionally a flight between Christchurch and Antarctica, and these never follow the same track twice!
The tracks are interrupted erratically, but clearly not by fixed obstacles. There could be both positive and negative interference with reflections off buildings or even waves. The reception could be influenced by tide height. It’s unlikely to be ships, there is very little maritime traffic as well (the taller antenna receives AIS). The polar diagram for the aircrafts’ transmitters may not be perfectly uniform. Anyway, I’ll have a look at that code, thanks! (PS that’s a week’s worth of tracks in this image).
Hello from Christchurch. Explains why everyone has such good warning and track from the c17/c130s now!
A welcome addition, but makes my receiver redundant for early warning
I think someone in inv/qtn/Dunedin might have their location set wrong for fr24 too. Check out the airways navaids on the top of the hills down there. one of them (when mlat could see it and they weren’t set to ignore) artificially swings in an arc almost originating on dunners.
I thought someone would be interested I don’t think your receiver is redundant, I have only seen one Antarctic flight in the last week - northbound on 6th Feb, all the others have been further out to sea, and I have some hills blocking my view to the east. So I might see flights further south, but I don’t see all of them. I can’t see any navaids moving around, although to be honest I’m not sure where they are supposed to be.
