Quite a few A380s

Living around 12 miles from Heathrow and with the good weather I noticed quite a few A380s passing overhead today. Didn’t check the details of the aircraft but reckon they were probably mainly, if not all, Emirates and Etihad.

Seems most of the passenger 747s have gone, do the 380s have a cargo version?

Geoff

Not yet officially. But some are in use for training purposes.

Almost every day the British Airways A380 passes my home approaching Frankfurt Airport.
So the short haul passengers have luck beeing carried in a wide body even for an hour

Lufthansa retired all of their fleet without plans to return them to service

Emirates and Qatar.
Etihad are not flying theirs yet, they are still in long term storage.
The freighter version of the A380 was cancelled.

I ran a query against the data recorded by my receiver from Feb 18th to now.

All Aircraft used an A388 (ICAO code), shown is the number of flights passing my location.

Registered Owners Flights
British Airways 115
Emirates Airline 1012
Qatar Airways 199
Singapore Airlines 47
Total 1373

For reference, the total amount of recorded flights is 145300
So in less than 1% of all flights, an A380 was used

I live in the UAE and Emirates has definitely been flying more A380s. They are way fewer planes parked at DWC and I see many going in and out of DXB on my receiver everyday. Still nowhere close to pre-pandemic level though.

Qantas has three of their twelve A380’s back in the air mainly on the SYD/LAX route.

That is fascinating data.

Not sure it will ever return to pre pandemic activity, there is definitely a move towards cutting travel to hit green targets.

No cargo versions of the A380 were built.

I’ve queried some more details from my DB the last four weeks.

Current registered owner, aircraft used and flights per aircraft.
Emirates was using almost the whole active fleet

That is fascinating data, where do you get that from?

Geoff

I am using a Python script which collects the flight information from my receiver and put them into a SQLite Database

I was looking for a solution which covers the flights and not only the aircraft per day. In my region it happens pretty often that an aircraft passes more than once per day.

VirtualRadarServer also does have a Database Writer plugin, but i don’t like how the data is stored there.

Used to use Virtual Radar Server when I ran more than one adsb tuner but havent done so for a while.

I tend to be quite happy with my basic set up but find it fascinating when people like yourself use add ons and scripts to obtain extra data and information.

Geoff

My setup is pretty straight forward.

I am using a Jetvision Airsquitter. The data is going to a Raspberry with readsb installed because the Python script is querying the aircraftlist there.

I did it because i wanted to have a flight log of flights covered by my receiver.
It is impressive that now after 40 days of logging > 150.000 flights were registered.

I am currently working also on a log showing departure and destination airport, but the data delivered by the flight is not that good, only approx 70% of all flights do have a flight number in the data.

Guess with all that data it is being written somewhere other than SD card.

Geoff

My Raspberry is using a small 128GB SSD only.

But SQLite is writing in blocks, not really challenging for an SD card.
Alternatively (if no SSD) you can write to RAM (with ramdisk) and copy the DB over from time to time.

Finally you could also use a network mount and write it there.

Currently 57 A380s in the air at the moment.

I guess they are not quite dead yet.
