Qantas pilots declare ‘mayday’ due to low fuel on transcontinental flight

That is cutting it tight.

A few extra minutes holding and they are into reserves. Qantas are being cheap about hauling a few extra gallons around.

This is just related to a new Australian law requiring them to declare a mayday when they reach a certain threshold. They had plenty of fuel. There was going to be a delay at the destination and they were required to declare a fuel mayday.

That sounds like a stupid law. MAYDAY is supposed to mean you’re in immediate danger, such as losing an engine. They should be using PAN which means they’re in serious trouble but not in immediate danger, though it could escalate into a MAYDAY situation later.

What is PAN? I’m new here.

It was explained directly above your post.

Thanks. I wish there was chat room for everyone who follows the “maydays.” I Want to the endings & follow up.
