PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - The Wood County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting of a small private plane that was flying between Parkersburg and Ravenswood.
Sheriff Jeff Sandy says police don’t know much at this point other than that the shooting happened either in Wood County or Jackson County.
The Cessna 172 was hit in the wing on May 31, although the plane’s owner didn’t notice it for several days. No one was injured and the flight wasn’t affected.
Terry Moore, manager of the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport, says it was a matter of luck that the flight wasn’t seriously imperiled.
Here’s a map of the state. The route of the flight in question is in pink in the western side of the state. Good thing it was a relatively short flight - helps narrow down the area to avoid.
With that bullet hole, I’m sure through advanced ballistic science, they can match the striations with a bullet - the bullet to a gun - and the gun to the shooter. With some good detective work, they should be able to close this case within an hour.

Just a slightly more serious note … a company I worked for had some employees working at the Ravenswood Aluminum plant … when the plant went on strike I had to go back to teach our guys some computer stuff. They told me to stay away from the plant because the strikers would have no qualms about using a hunting slingshot to put a ball bearing through the windshield of your car … no matter if you happened to be behind that part of the windshield.
This is the West side of West Virginia, after all … and before someones panties get bunched up the Stephenson house in Parkersburg [local historical site] is named for ancestors on my mothers side so I have a local connection …
Aircraft getting shot at isn’t really all that uncommon in the more rural areas. Chicken farmers get sick of low flying airplanes scaring their chickens (the shadow spooks the chickens, causing them to “stampede” and crush each other), moonshiners (yes they still exist) and pot farmers don’t like people seeing what they’re up to, and drunk or generally deranged folks take shots at aircraft on a regular basis.
