Privacy Error Using Amazon FireHD/Chrome Blocking Access to Flight Content:

Just a heads up and I guess caused by the ruthless progress of things …

I nomally use my old Amazon Fire HD10 and Chrome (I had to trick-install Chrome because the included browser, Silk, wouldn’t render the Piaware content) to view my local Piaware output and not long back could access flight detail from the Flightaware site. I now ( 27 Sept’23 ) get “Your connection is not private” and it all hits the stops from there. Local access to “/skyaware” still OK. Clearly, someone somewhere has made something better. My guess being updated security certificates or something really simple and routine.

The attention span of the great Amazon empire drifted off topic a while back and my Fire’s operation system updates petered out and updates to my Chrome went with it. So, nothing has changed my end for ages.

Whatever happened happened fairly recently or something broke. It all works as advertised on my current Ubuntu/Firefox so its probably a case of progress. Not complaining (really) just placing a stick in the sand for others our there with the same problem.

Thank you for your attentiion. SteveW.

There was recently a root certificate expiry that broke a few systems that had not updated their root trust store (so did not have an updated root) for a long time, I’m guessing it’s related to that.

Your best bet is a Chrome update, if you can finangle that somehow (or I guess install the new cert by hand – I’m not sure how the Fire does CA chain management …)

(I think it was this expiry, but I’m not 100% sure: SSL.com Legacy Cross-Signed Root Certificate Expiring on September 11, 2023 - SSL.com)
