Finally had some time to assemble my FA Antenna mount and update my PiAware. Went from only being able to pick things up as far south as Kingston, ON (from Ottawa), now I pick things up as far south as Buffalo. Good range I’d say for an indoor setup! I’m using Wifi on my Pi3 now .
Actually there may be an option to get it outside on a mast… Does one have to install any sort of lightning protection if it’s outside? I was thinking about attaching the antenna to a mast on my fence that currently has my satellite dish on it…
There are differing opinions on ‘lightning protection’ as it relates to these ADS-B setups, but a relatively low antenna setup like that will not require any elaborate protection. Should work fine. Of course, if you have the inclination, it’s not a bad idea te make sure your things are well grounded before they enter the house.
Are you using the FA filter or some sort of ADS-B filter? If so, by grounding it, you will have provided sufficient static protection as well for your setup.
I am. I’m using the FA filter. How does one go about grounding the antenna/filter. Is there anything I should attach to the antenna?
I’ve got some RG6 cable already running from outside to somewhere in the basement where I could attach my dongle and Raspberry Pi, so the infrastructure is already there.
Also, I live in a cold part of Canada where it gets to about -25 celcius throughout the winter. Is the FA antenna capable of withstanding these cold temperatures and will it have an impact on the signals?
