These aircraft are used for test beds. Here is a quote from Wikipedia “P-3 Orion. NASA currently uses the P-3 as an earth-science suborbital research platform and is located at Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility, Virginia.”

Thanks for the reply. Wonder what it was researching up here? Perhaps something to do with the really cold weather up here. The flight track has dissapeared from flightaware but it was a very interesting flight track of zig-zaging across the state from border to border.
