Multilateration data no longer required, disabling mlat client

Since I upgraded to piaware 10.0.1 my MLAT - will not stay running. On 9.X it would disconnect from time to time but normally I would see the green box on my stat page. After the upgrade my MLAT is always disabled. Now maybe because I have a very good location and I personally don’t need MLAT as only about 0.5% of my traffic is from MLAT but why does it not stay online for others to triangulate off of me? Basically about every minute, the mlat-client just chooses to shutdown and then a minute or so later restarts.

MLAT is enabled and my location is set by gpsd but should be a fixed location. Maybe the people that work on the code only enable the client when there is a plane without position information.

Your mlat client is sending some malformed data, though I’m not immediately sure what the cause of that is.

What is the hardware, and how did you build or install piaware & mlat-client?

The original install was done around Oct 2023 on an raspbian lite install with the piaware packages added onto a raspberry pi 4. The 1090 radio is an airspy mini with some bias-t powered LNA that I can’t recall connected to FlightAware antenna. It was configured by the scripts provided by GitHub - wiedehopf/airspy-conf: Configure airspy_adsb for use with readsb or piaware.. The 978 radio is a RTL-SDR V3 connected to another Flightaware antenna. There also a cheap gps usb dongle configured via gpsd that works on startup about 75% of the time otherwise returns 00,00. After the upgrade to 10.0.1 via apt upgrade and a reboot. GPS was broken so I restarted gpsd and piaware and everything seemed fine. Around March of 2024 the PI was replaced with a PI5. This was done by just switching SD cards and apt upgrade commands. Lastly for completeness I have rbfeeder installed for AirNav, however I never configured MLAT for it as I did not want to deal with running another mlat client. I have stopped rbfeeder as of 8:30 am EDT and it does not seem to be affecting the fa-mlat-client from restarting. Lastly I can’t easily touch the current system as it is on top of a 130 ft tower.

Thanks for the info. I think I’ve identified the problem on our side (it affects only sites that can see a large number of aircraft simultaneously). I’ll let you know when I have an ETA for a fix.

Thank you. I also have been experiencing the MLAT function on my system turning itself on and off all day long. I lose it during high traffic periods of the day, and it stays active as the traffic diminishes later in the day. MLAT is currently shut down while the system is tracking 456 aircraft.

On my Debian trixie/sid on PC (x86_64) and on Armbian trixie/sid on RPi4 (aarch64), it only occassionally happens, not so frequent as what you have described.

It’s been going on here for a number of months now and don’t recall the actual start. I was accepting it as a result of the MLAT protocol seeing my MLAT data as possibly redundant to existing system data and was shutting my local process down since it was no longer needed by the system. It would revert to running in “Beast” format and then again shut down shortly thereafter. Thought it rather odd but made no pretense of understanding the MLAT theory of operation.

On my debian trixi/sid x86_64 & armbian trixie/sid aarch64, I am using tcl-tls-rebuild instead of tcl-tls from Debian repository. May be that makes a difference??? @obj can shed some light.

Sometimes I get a NOTICE (see attached screenshot).
It is not frequent, only occasional.
Do you also get such notices?

No, I have never seen a message that MLAT messages were not reaching the server. My Rpi4B is hard wire ethernet connected to an ethernet switch on a network that is typically extremely reliable.

Same for myself. I am also hardwired (PoE) and have not personally seen that one.

WIFI connections are great, until they aren’t. UDP messages are just broadcast by the sender without proof of receipt. It often works, but in high traffic situations whether in the source location or on the internet, they get dropped often because of data collisions between the sender and the receiver. Happens all the time. We used to call it the Unreliable Data Protocol. I’ve been doing this since the late '70’s.

I see this NOTICE only on Debian-13 trixie/sid x86_64 in Oracle VM on Windows 10 Desktop, connected by eathernet wire to router.

Never seen this NOTICE on RPi with bookworm & trixie/sid, connected on WiFi

Have to wonder if your ethernet connection is dealing with a lot of congestion and contention for the network? Are other computers connected directly to the router?

This Desktop and an OrangePi are wired to the sub-router. This sub-router is connected to main router by wireless. It is TP-Link mesh network. The main router gets feed from Fiber-Optic box, to which incoming fiber-optic cable from ISP is connected.

I have done speed check at this Desktop, and it is around 250~300 Mb/s download & upload.

This is my internet service. Declared speed is 500 Mb download/upload, but I measured several times on different days &times, it is 250~300 Mb at the Desktop, which is connected to sub-router

EDIT:
The type of service declared by my ISP is FTTB
I just now Googled to find what FTTB stands for. AI says FTTB means “Fiber To The Building”. The ISP brings fiber up to building’s telecom room, and wired connections from telecom room to individual apartments.

However my ISP, instead of using wires from telecom room to individual apartments, has provided fiber from telecom room to individual apartments as well.
