Icing?
I’m sure that weather/ice was the cause.
You don’t leave JAC in snow storm unless your burning Jet-A.
The freezing level is the ground, MEA’s are very high, the terrain pushes the system air up so you can’t get into colder air above the ice in a piston aircraft.
As 185Driver pointed out, it appears that’s the likely culprit.
Can’t begin to imagine how the wife and remaining son are coping.
