I was watching CNN ten or so hours after the incident, they did show thunderstorm activity in the area of the “normal route” South of the crash site. They speculated that could be one reason the path deviated from the “normal route”. Didn’t sound unreasonable to me if the cells were capable of causing possible turbulence at the normal flight level.

“Initial” pictures of the CVR and DFDR see to show them in reasonable condition. How are the Malay folks with the next steps, anyone know? Think they’ll end up in the hands of the NTSB?
