Why are the tracking maps temporarily unavailable and for how long?

Hmmmmmm… maybe they’re implementing the much-anticipated zoomable maps…? I’ve got my fingers crossed!
We had a server crash and a second server got overloaded and hit a software problem that took it out, causing a cascading failure that briefly took the FA website down. We took map generation offline for a while so we could bring the site back up and we redirected a bunch of the map load to another data center. Map generation was restored at 17:08 CDT.
As to the much-requested and long-awaited panning and zooming, it is super imminent. I don’t know if you’ll think it was worth the wait, but it’s hot.
I have just tracked 8 flights, and the maps failed to appear on all 8.

We have recently identified a design flaw that causes map display to fail under heavy load. It’s fixed in the new stuff that hasn’t been pushed yet and I’ve resisted backporting it to the existing stuff. If we don’t get the new stuff out shortly we’ll bite the bullet and backport the fix. Maps right now are our number one development priority.
