is this legal?

Can a CFI hold out to the public like this?

Bonus points if you can name the airport in the picture.

Tillamook.

And yes, it’s legal. He’s a CFI advertising flight instruction. If he said, “Want a ride to Seattle? I’ll fly you there!” then it would be illegal. As it is now, he’s only advertising as a CFI, not holding out to the public for general transportation purposes, which would require 135 certificate.

It’s called advertising.

Very resourceful advertising at that.

I wonder just how much traffic he will draw from Craigslist? I personally wouldn’t have thought to go there for my aviation needs.

Hookers ,yes, aviation needs, no.

You too fast to say. May not be legal.
~Is he charging students?
~Is he a commercial pilot or better?
One not know.

Yo JHEM

Where’s that “boat” of yours?

Kind of hard to make a living as a CFI if he doesn’t charge.
In order to be a CFI you need a commercial rating.

No. Private Pilot is good for CFI.

[quote]Eligibility requirements

**Flight instructors in the United States must hold at least a commercial pilot certificate. **

Individuals wishing to give instruction in airplanes or powered-lift aircraft are additionally required to hold an instrument rating in the desired category and class. Holders of a sport pilot certificate may obtain a flight instructor certificate with sport pilot rating, allowing them to give instruction for the sport pilot certificate in light-sport aircraft.

All individuals desiring flight instructor privileges must pass two additional written exams (Fundamentals of Instruction, or FOI; and a knowledge test specific to the category of aircraft in which instructional privileges are desired, such as fixed-wing) as well as a practical test.

How the heck did you know that was Tillamook? did you know from just looking at it?

I was never a CFI so I wasn’t sure if you can advertise your services like that. I have never seen CFI’s advertising, and the ad made me suspicious.

Not quite sure this is correct???

CFI for VFR?
CFII for IFR?

At least that is the way I understood the difference between the two???

Just a commercial needed for the CFI. Commercial and Instrument rating for CFII.

Wiki (crazy as it sounds) probably more accurate.

Anytime you charge someone or get paid for flying, you need a commercial ticket.

Which one Allen?

Clearwater’s out of Poughkeepsie, NY:

Pioneer’s out of South Street Seaport Museum in NYC:

Or did you mean one of the “little” boats?

Nah, the one with the trollers :stuck_out_tongue:

You can give instruction for free. I used to give my wife instruction for free…

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh…

REMINDER: This is an aviation forum.

I said charge for something!

I’ve heard that your wife said that what you knew wasn’t worth paying for! :stuck_out_tongue:

You need an instrument ticket to hold a CFI ticket for airplanes – doesn’t mater if you’re a CFII or not.

To be a CFII, you need to take a CFII checkride (and have done the FOI written and Instrument Instructor written exams).

You do not have to be a CFI-ASEL to hold a CFII ticket.
