Wondering if it is possible to convert a flightaware 1090 MHz Antenna to a 978 MHz Antenna. I Have an extra 1090 and am getting my 978 feed going, or would the 1090 work decent for 978 just not ideal. Thanks Andy
The short answer … it will not be ideal. The reason … the wavelength for 978 is longer than 1090, thus the antenna will not be optimal for 978. Could you modify it … depending on what it is.
Would it work as it is ? Probably … but you would be better off buying a proper antenna, though there is nothing preventing you from trying. The one GOOD thing is that you are only receiving, thus it is a lot less critical than if you were using it to transmit.
Sell your extra 1090 and put that towards a proper 978 antenna.
I should have added I do have a 978 on order from Flightaware. Placed the order Tuesday and still has not shipped and likely wont until Tuesday at the earliest. Just getting antsy. I am up an running with a very small antenna inside not getting alot of action. Being 978 and inside I need all the help i can get. I will wait untill the new 978 antenna arrives. Thanks
Since you are indoors, no harm in hooking up the 1090 Mhz antenna to your 978 system. Get it as high as you can in a window, staying away from metal parts. Perhaps keep the spare 1090 antenna, and you can use it in a test system in the future to experiment on improvements to your current 1090 system. Don’t ask how many spare parts we have all accumulated over the years as we experiment and have fun with our hardware tinkering.

QUICK SPIDER - No Soldering, No Connector
Made of RG6 Coax Cable (the Coax Cable used for TV and Dish antennas).
The dimensions of whip & radials shown are 69mm, which are for 1090 MHz.
For 978 Mhz use 76mm instead of 69mm
NOTE: To connect this antenna to Flightaware ProStick or Radarbox FlightStick, you will need a short (30cm) pigtail with F-Female connector at one end and SMA-Male connector at other end
