I’m not an expert, but I believe that the number variances are due to different seating layouts, as well as other options, mainly dealing with cabin features, that are available to the airlines. I’m not sure if engine selection (such as the GE-90 vs. RR-Trent engines on the 777) has anything to do with the numbers or not, but I’m sure someone out there could answer a little more thoroughly.

BTW: In the future, be a little more specific with your subject heading. “Help Needed” doesn’t grab anyone to jump into what you need help with, but a subject line like “Aircraft type numbers…What do they mean?” would elicit a quick response from someone browsing through the forum. Just a tip.

For Boeing, the last two numbers are called the customer code. Delta has a code of 32 for example. Click on Boeing codes here for the full list.

For Airbus, part of it has to do with engine choice, but I’m not sure about both numbers. Here is a list of which engine corresponds to which number.

thx , great information .
