Guide for adding 978 MHZ to existing 1090 MHZ system

I’ve run a 1090 site for years and want to add 978 to the same Pi. I have a spare FlightWare orange/yellow dongle and a dedicated 978 antenna. I know there are a number of posts on the subject, but I wonder if there is a single ‘guide’ to how to do this with current 7.2 software. Thanks.

Hope this helps…

OK, I’ve added my 2nd dongle and antenna and followed the steps. Everything looks like I am monitoring both 979 and1090 now but I don’t see any planes on my 978 map. This could be because there isn’t much GA around here, but I just want to make sure my setup is OK. Here is the status I get from my 978:

pi@piaware:~ $ sudo systemctl status dump978-fa
● dump978-fa.service - dump978 ADS-B UAT receiver

and this is what I get from my 1090:

Any obvious problems (like the ‘PLL not locked!’ message)??

Thanks.

Which SDR / antenna?
Where is the antenna located?

Might be necessary to reduce gain.
I’d recommend running graphs1090 and after a day posting the signal graph for 1090 and 978 if you want advice on that.
https://github.com/wiedehopf/graphs1090#graphs1090

My 978 dongle is a orange FlightAware Pro Stick with an AirNav UAT 978 antenna.
My 1090 dongle is a blue FlightAware Pro Stick plus with a sepearte 1090 antenna.
Antenna placement could be better and I’ll work on that.
When I inquire about gain, it reports ‘max’ (not a number like the version 5 instructions say)
Running PiAware 7.2
I’ll get graphs1090
I also live pretty close to a large airport (BWI) so not all that much GA around?
Thanks.

set gain for 978 to 36
set gain for 1090 to 43.9 or auto

@JonAHupp Let that 36 gain run for a few sunny days (not many GA aircraft in poor weather) and then compare to running with 978 gain at around 25.4 for a few days. (That was my UAT sweet spot prior to adding an LNA).

Once you have graphs1090 installed for a couple days, look at where the minimum signal level graph bottoms out. For UAT, around -30 is usually good for most stations. Don’t be too quick to judge a setting. The volume of UAT aircraft is pretty low for most locations.
