Dan Hoffman was working on a plane at Mesquite Municipal Airport Sunday morning when the doors of his hangar started to shake and rattle. He looked out to see a whirlwind sweep across the tarmac and flip an airplane over.
Good thing nobody was in it!
I can see that happening. 67L is on the western side of the Virgin River Gorge, which gets some hellacious winds. Most prevailing winds come from the southwest (like most down there). KSGU is on the other side of it, but protected by the gorge, plus is up on a high plateau. But strong enough winds there can blow over anything there. Luckily it isn’t monsoon season (yet). otherwise they’d have a flipped and soaked Skyhawk!
BL.
Many years ago we had a storm pop up and it darn near flipped one of the warriors on the ramp. The wing lifted up several feet before it settled down. We got 6-10 guys to sit on the wings and tow it inside the hanger. Young and stupid. A few years after that a warrior flipped over due to a wind gust with two occupants while stationary on the ramp. All in Ohio…just caught the plane in the wrong way.
