LOS ANGELES – An airliner that had taken off for a flight to Hawaii returned to Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday after a faulty oven sent smoke into the cockpit, aviation officials said.

None of the 244 passengers and eight crew members aboard ATA Airlines Flight 4755 was injured, airline spokeswoman Maya Wagle said.

The Boeing 757 had taken off around 9 a.m. and was a half-hour into its flight to Honolulu when the pilot declared an emergency, said Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration. It landed shortly after 10 a.m.

A malfunctioning oven situated next to the cockpit sent “a little bit of smoke” into the flight crew space, Wagle said.

Wagle said it was the first safety-related malfunction on an ATA flight in the airline’s 34-year history. She said the plane would return to service after the oven was repaired.
