978 UAT Position reported vs Aircraft Reported?

Good morning,

So, I just set my Pi up a few days on with only tracking 978mhz my question is what’s the difference between Aircraft reported and Position reported mean? It also reporting “other”. I don’t see any airplanes listed that I have reported like I see on other sites. I think I’m going to buy another 1090mhz kit so I can see a lot more traffic. Anyone have recommendations on how to expand? my pi only has a HDMI spot left or do i need a USB hub?

USB hub is the magic. Then you also can plug in a ethernet dongle to run hard wired ethernet.

Aircraft reported is the number of aircraft that has been seen by your reciever.
Positions reported is the number of positions reported by those aircraft.
One aircraft can report multiple positions while in range of your antenna so the number of positions is always higher then the number of aircraft.
Other is reported when there is not enough data to identify the aircraft correctly or when the data is recieved but damaged.

This made me wonder about msgs received from dump1090 and messages sent to FA. Mine are usually quite close but the messages sent to FA are fewer than the dump1090 by a few from time to time. Is that due to signal quality alone, say from the edge of my range? Interference? Another reason?

I understand positions versus aircraft. Many ping me multiple times.

This could be caused by messages that are outside of the time frame of the reporting.
The numbers are small indeed but your log is updated every 5 minutes and that might show that some of them are outside the time frame.
It is not useful to report outdated messages so they are discarded when reporting to the server.

Interesting. Never considered the age of msg received.

Thanks, Tom.
