Why random AE photos?

Why are there random American Eagle Embraer photos for American Eagle flights? I say airlines should have their logo, not a picture.

I like the pictures of the airliners. If I had my druthers I would have only side-on shots, no quarter- or head-on shots. But that’s my preference.

The pictures are based on the votes received by FlightAware users.

If you don’t like the photos, you should upload new ones they’ll get voted higher if they’re better. Certainly the better photos are more representative of the airlines.

The photo of ERJs was mistagged as CRJ7, I’ve corrected it.

These photos are spoiling the site and the practice should be stopped until some ‘rules’ are in place.

This is a perfect illustration -

  1. Crappy photo
  2. Photo is of a different a/c type to that of the flight
  3. Flight alternates between 2 different types so no single photo will ever be 100% relevant.

Please stop this practice.

You can vote on any other photo to improve the ranking of it and it may be included instead.

  1. Photo is of a different a/c type to that of the flight

I see a 737 for the 737 flights and a 757 for the 757 flight.

  1. Flight alternates between 2 different types so no single photo will ever be 100% relevant.

It always shows the right photo for the right type. Is that not what you’re seeing? The photo system is aware that the type changes.

I don’t want to vote on it. I have better things to do with my time than click buttons. If you are going to include photos then it would help the site image that you are trying to set by including some decent photos instead of ones that have been taken with a camera at 45 degrees to the ground and irrelevant to the flight concerned.

I am seeing a picture of a B739 when the flight is a B738.

Well clearly the system is not aware as the flight is never operated by a B739.

The same applies to COA471 as well, which shows an overhead shot of a B752 when the flight is operated by a B753.

Well, Rob. I guess you could cancel the membership you pay so much for then…

Rob: I think voting for a picture is the best way to put a picture on tracking page. It saves time for the FlightAware’s staff because they don’t have to go through the pictures and pick them.

As I mentioned, I’d prefer side shots rather than quarter shots but if the best picture voted for is a quarter shot then so be it. After all, the primary purpose of this site is flight tracking, not aircraft photography. There’s many other sites for that.

Hi, RobK. I’m not sure if you’re joking?

If not, the entire photo system is based on community involvement. Users upload photos and vote on them. If you don’t have time to upload or vote, you’re going to be subject to the contributions of other users. That said, with all community features, they will dramatically improve over time.

As far as B738 vs B739 (and similar examples), that is intentional. We group families together to get the best possible photo of that family of aircraft to give users an idea of the aircraft servicing that flight.

There is absolutely no way you can tell the differences you’re asserting based on the thumbnail. If you can’t tell the difference visually but being mentally aware that it’s a B738 instead of a B739 is causing usability problems for you, I don’t think that’s something we can help with.

With all the tremendous information available on this website oh and yes for free, why would anyone complain about a tiny thumbnail photo that might not be the exact plane flying on that flight? Some people can never be pleased. I suppose the next thing will be for someone to ask for a photo of an exact tail number be supplied for that flight.
