RE: Airport Pictures Now Available

Dan, et. al.,

Love the addition of the airport aerial photos to the airport info pages.

But, just wanted to let you know that the orientation of the photos is sometimes out of alignment with the airport diagram.

E.g.: KOPF, KSTL, KIAH.

Should we report these errors to you guys or simply accept that some errors will occur?

Regards,

James the Elder

That’s because a lot of the airport diagrams aren’t oriented to north. You would have to change something within the GE map, and customize it to each airport.

I realize that, I just thought that the concept was to present the photos and diagrams in the same alignment.

As Dan said in this announcement; “The airport pictures are generally perfectly oriented with the adjacent airport diagram (when available) and really create a new level of understanding and detail so that FlightAware users can see surrounding terrain.”

I just wasn’t sure if he/they were aware of these minor glitches or if they wanted to have them pointed out when noted.

Didn’t know he said that, and I guess he didn’t take into account the diagrams’ orientation.

The keyword here is generally. This means something that happens most, but not all, of the time. In other words, you will get photos that do not match up with the diagram.

It’s too bad, though, that some of the big ones, like JFK and LAX aren’t lined up, though.

Well, DUH Dave!

I guess you missed the point of my initial post, “Should we report these errors to you guys or simply accept that some errors will occur?”.

Which I reiterated in my reply to Newark777, “I just wasn’t sure if he/they were aware of these minor glitches or if they wanted to have them pointed out when noted”.

another thing i notices is not all pictures are current (katl, ksln, khut). i’m sure there are more but these airports have done things like added runways and such which dont show up on the pictures.

Well it’s as up to date as Google Earth cause it’s essentially a smaller version of it.

That’s right, these are the same images you would see on Google Earth and other Google mapping pages. FA has no control over it.

And if you click the Google link bottom left in the photo, it will take you to the bigger version.
