That’s not really how it works.
The weakest signal you see typically correlates with the noise level.
That noise can picked up by the antenna which is unavoidable or it’s introduced on the signal path after the antenna.
Just the dBFS won’t tell you which of the two scenarios is your limit.
Once you optimize the gain a bit, the lowest signal number becomes a little bit more meaningful: Thoughts on optimizing gain
Because then it’s the weakest signal compared to the strongest signal.
I’m trying to get my FR24 feed working with Skyaware using Wiedehopf’s script so I can use dump1090-fa 5.0, but I’m totally new to all this and can’t get it working right - just when I think I have something stops working, so I may just have to stick with the version
It’s really not that difficult having it installed on Raspberry OS.
Follow the instructions on how to have the Raspberry running with Raspberry OS and then follow the instructions for each feeder. Most of the time the installation and the questions during it are self explaining.
I started with the FA Image first but very soon i moved over to Raspberry OS
I’m just new to all of this - I have a technical background, but in professional audio design.
I started with a blank RPi 4 and loaded the FR24 image on it, downloaded from the FR24 wesbsite, using the Win32diskimager app.
It’s been running great, so then I ran your script you suggested, as my dump1090 was very old.
It all worked, but my RPi was still in read only mode, so I couldn’t change gains etc.
Started it all from scratch and eventually got it all working, put my RPi back in the loft and it just sat there with 0 aircraft seen or uploaded, like the FR24 feed doesn’t automatically run on a reboot.
So, what RPi OS should I install first? Rasbian Lite?
The do I run the FR24 image and then your script?
I tried this yesterday, but got loads of errors when rebooting the RPi regarding missing monitor feeds or not being able to start a whole host of things.
Sorry for being pain, but being new to RPis and ADS-B, it’s somewhat in at the deep end for me
Well if you run my scripts you don’t change any settings via that fr24 configuration page …
Reading the help page for the script you install should tell you how to change gain.
So you didn’t use the script but went the manual way, not even sure where that is mentioned.
It’s an old issue fr24 corrected that particular issue.
Edit: Interesting … seems on the current image modifying the settings via the page at :8754 is just completely impossible.
Oh well … whatever.
Raspberry OS Lite is sufficient.
And do not run the FR24 image afterwards. It will overwrite the whole image. Use the FR24 script instead for an existing device as described here:
All sorted now - I started with a fresh RPi OS, installed the fr24feed from the command line and then ran your script. dump1090-fa is working great and the Pi is also feeding my FR24 account, so happy days.
I will repeat this for my second radar set-up and then wait for my new antenna and cable toys to arrive.
