Laser Projectors

I’m seeing laser projectors this year for Christmas displays. Do they affect air traffic at all? Or is it just the powerful single beam ones that are a problem?

There was something on FA about “lazy lights” last year, apparently they can affect air traffic if not positioned correctly…

On Thursday (2015) in Texas, an American Airlines pilot was hit by a laser while flying at 13,000 feet. Police traced the beam back to a home with a laser light display.

Thanks. That’s exactly what I was looking for. I live in a neighborhood where planes are generally between 3000 and 6000 feet above ground and can be flying directly overhead but are usually just east of our location. I noticed some of these pointed up into the trees. As soon as the leaves fall off, which they’ve started to do, that will be mostly empty space.

And California?

I was very confused by this post since we just bought a laser projector (Dell 7760) for a FlightAware conference room this week… my first thought was “how do they know??”

Not that one, this one:

Merry Christmas to all the FA folks

The fine beam pointers, or whatever the technical term is, are bad news. I’ve been hit while flying at lower altitudes and it wasn’t fun. I had a bright red spot in my eyes for a few seconds after looking away. I had No lasting effects but they can cause longer term damage. We told the tower but the source was several miles away, they called the police but I doubt they found the shooter. The pattern at that airport is over the ocean and I could tell we were being targeted by the motion of the beam.
