Hi All,
I am running piaware 7.2 on raspberry pi 3 and its works fine so far but I curious if there any benefit if I use raspberry 4 ?
I also have old PC with Xeon E3 1280 that collecting dust did use this PC with ubuntu 20.04 better choice ?
If your feeder isn’t broken don’t fix it. Use the Pi 4 for something else, and put a lightweight Linux distro on the Xeon PC if you want to try to use it for something. I recommend MX Fluxbox or antiX.
Why is that ?
I mean why if I use airspy (R2 or mini ?) I need more horse power in my CPU ?
I just run my generic RTL-SDR for about 35 days I more concern about range so LNA with a good BPF (band pass filter) combine with a good antenna is my prime consideration for now, but I not a stubborn student I really like to learn for other experience.
here my range report.
and here my location surrounded by mountain and hill
Yes, more CPU power can improve reception. And the Pi 4 is using USB 3 where the Airspy benefits as well.
However it is possible to run the Airspy even on a Pi 3
The range cannot be improved if you’re already on your max limited by your environment.
First i would go to heywhatsthat.com and check what is your theoretical range.
Then compare it to your current range and identify what can be done
Hint:
If you are using readsb instead of dump1090-fa as decoder, it does have a nice feature showing the current range outline. You can create an overlay from heywhatsthat and have a direct comparison.
That’s easy and does not need money or lots of work
