historical fuel prices

Hi all:

I am trying to put together a historical series of aviation fuel prices for the period 2004-2009. Ideally this would be weekly (or even daily) and would have separate data by region (or even airport). I plan to use the series to approximate flying costs for various GA aircraft.

As a non-pilot I had a couple of questions which I was hoping folks here might answer:

(1) Jet fuel vs Avgas.
My (limited) understanding is that reciprocating engines use avgas (100LL) while turbines used jet fuel (Jet A). Do these prices tend to move together or will they tend not to stay in sync? I ask since I have found a pretty good jet fuel source (2b below), but not sure if this tells us much about what is happening with avgas.

(2) Possible sources.
(a) FlightAware
I know the site has current prices for Jet A and 100LL most airports under the FBO tab (for my home airport: flightaware.com/resources/airpor … businesses). Does anyone know if old versions of these data are kept (I will contact FA folks but perhaps someone here knows)?
(b) US EIA
They have daily spot prices for “Kerosene-Type Jet Fuel: U.S. Gulf Coast” for the period 1990-2012 (eia.gov/dnav/pet/pet_pri_spt_s1_d.htm). Aside from not having data at the region/airport level, this seems pretty good as a measure for jet fuel. Are there any known problems with these data?
(c) Other jet fuel source
Not sure of these add anything to the EIA, and I could not see the actual data but for completeness wanted to list them.

Thanks as always in advance for any pointers. I will post any additional infos I find in follow-up posts in case anyone later is interested in this topic.

We have prices for thousands of facilities in the US for the last 5 years, give customer service a call.

100LL may not track JetA like mogas doesn’t exactly track diesel. Also that’s the wholesale price not what the operator actually pays.

Thanks Mark:
I am putting in my request now!

Hi Mad Professor,

Did you have any luck with getting the historical data? Im currently looking for similar data, but tracking back from the present to, well, as far as I can get. Any guidance or help on this would be very much appreciated,

cheers

Hi dubscientist1,

We have fuel prices for thousands of locations, mostly in the US, for 2007 - present. Please send customer service an email or give them a call with your specific needs.

Hi…I think I found the info you’re looking for. It’s available from the U. S. Energy Information Administration website.

Here’s the address: eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHa … US_DPG&f=M

Thanks tb!

This is a great complement to the other EIA series (Kerosene-Type Jet Fuel, U.S. Gulf Coast) from my original post. My only concern would be the occasional breaks and the fact it is at a monthyl frequency. But yes great find, very much appreciated!!!
