Gain advice please

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. Were shielded by hills to the north, around 600’ high. Pretty open to the S/SE which kinda explains the plot. To the west there are houses above us, so not improving in that direction. I need to get the antenna a couple of meters up the pole and see what it affects. Not expecting much but mainly curious if it will make any difference. I could possibly do better with the antenna in the loft and a really short cable to the Pi.

600 feet is a heck of a Hill. Did you already post what antenna you are using? I am never a fan of the loft. I would just maximize what you can see to the south and enjoy that best you can.
Cheers! Vinnant out of Slovakia makes great antennas for reasonable $$. That’s what I use hear in central Florida. Nice and flat here on the peninsula.

Outdoor antenna is an AirNav Systems (the other lot!). Very tempted by the Vinnant but worried about getting screwed for shipping /tax charges. The loft comment came about because I’ve another site with a loft antenna and it’s not a lot different from the ‘main’ one in terms of aircraft seen.

I wouldn’t be to concerned about the shipping charges from Vinnant. I paid 15 euro’s 2 weeks ago for 2 antennas and 2 cables. Shipping time is usually around a week so it’s very reasonable in time as well. When ordering on their website you can pick standard or express shipping (that’s more expensive). It will show you the available options for your location. I have a large range of antennas from them (multiple locations) and very happy with the performance. Their 5.5 dB model COL1090/5-SU goes for 35 euro’s, that’s 30 euro’s less then the FA antenna but has equal or better performance :+1:t2:

Thanks @tomvdhorst, I’ll look to place an order next week.

In my younger days, I used to just reach out through the window and lowered it to the ground. But, the taller they get, masts often get heavier too.

I guess a good design would use pulleys. What ever happened to @keithma?

This is the Vinnant stick that I have in the air. Very pleased with it. It will cost some extra “europas” however.

Good to see you! Did the shoulder heal up ok?

Thanks for remembering
It’s as healed as it’s ever going to be. I’m in constant pain from it which I just live with as I don’t want to take pain killers all the time.
Forward flexion is 80° or so, abduction probably 70°. I can go further but it hurts to do so and then it hurts more to bring it back down. I can be just sitting watching the telly and it’ll suddenly ache more than normal causing me to wince.

I think the official term is ‘chronic pain’.

But if they hadn’t done the surgery, then I’d have no movement at all and be in a lot worse condition than I am now.

Sorry to hear that. I am in mostly the same boat, but with a 13 year old back injury. You cope as best you can.

Cheers!

Good to see you’re still around @keithma I hope the pain doesn’t keep you from doing the things you like. Hang in there.

@keithma
Sorry to hear about you chronic pain.

Well, glad to hear you’re around.

Thanks @jafrank Useful insight.
