On FlightAware’s web page it is quoted the data sources.
https://flightaware.com/about/datasources/
I noticed one of the sources is VHF and SATCOM ACARS datalink. Who provides the ACARS data source? I am being a bit nosey but I was wondering why there is not a FlightAware ACARS feeder option supported by the Pi Aware?
Maybe it is that ACARS uses a much lower frequency than ADS-B and it would be difficult to implement such a feeding feature in PiAware.
Our ACARS is from various ACARS service providers serving the commercial aviation and business aviation markets, rather than crowd sourcing it.
mduell,
Thanks for the reply. Would it ever be consider a option for us who provide feeds with a Pi Aware in the future to provide ACARS and possibly VDL-mode 2 data input? Maybe a separate feeder from a second Pi?
No, we’re not planning to support crowdsourced ACARS.
HF-ACARS, or HFDL, would be nicer, I think.
The problem is, any system other the ADS-B would attract a lot less interest.
A cost benefit study would certainly rule out all other modes but ADS-B.
Now from my point of view that having some “other” redundancies could be nice to have, plus I enjoy doing it so with what I can provide. I figured that ACARS, VDL-2 or HFDL would be great to also use as data providers.
I looked at ACARS a few years ago and didn’t find anything that I thought was interesting.
I just fired it up again and here is part of the log of messages. Is there something of interest here that I am missing?
