I got my PPL(H) in 2002 just after the fires that year. I had wanted to get it for years and things aligned, money and work wise, to allow me to do it.
I remember in the early 90s watching a 50ft wall of flames on the side of Ryde road near Lane Cove National Park(near the old caravan park. Gone now). We had to turn around and drive a long way around just to get back to Ryde.
I also lived in Melbourne during Ash Wednesday. I remember ash landing on our house in Malvern even though the fires were 30+ KM away.
