Connecting Antenna via Coax Already In House

Typically power issues, either USB extension to SDR or power supply are usually to blame.

Other possibility is a faulty SDR pretty much (less likely).

Does this mean it could be the USB port on the Pi, since it is directly plugged in? I never had this issue when using the Pro Stick Plus.

But the ProStick Plus didn’t have the bias t feeding your LNA. Sounds like the increase in load may be causing power supply issues.

Well then 2 choices remain, don’t they?

Which RPi is it?
Which power supply are you using?

I am running this on a Raspberry Pi 3 with a 5V 2.5 amp power source.

Have you checked the logs for dump1090-fa? And checked for power issues?

That’s an old Raspbian … i’d recommend upgrading at some point.

Does the log show somethign different when it freezes? How do you notice the “freeze”.

I’ve noticed it in two ways:

  1. Looking at the map, an error message will appear, mentioning something about “AJAX” (I believe).
  2. I received an outage alert email from FlightAware this morning. When I opened the map, no traffic was listed.

This usually clears when I send a reboot command.

How is this upgrade done? I used the Piaware Image from FlightAware.

You need to re-image with the current version.

Anyhow … for the current problem, check the log again once the problem occurs.
Really i’d recommend getting the Official Rpi power supply.
The power supply you’re using might just be on the way out, you can also try replugging the power connector in the hopes of improving the connection.

Ok, just re-image. Should be easy enough. I’ll try to get the log if the problem presents again. As for the power supply, I am using the one recommended by FlightAware:

So there is a slight possibility i suppose that re-imaging fixes it or the log tells us something.

If both are not the case it’s either the power supply or the SDR or even the Pi … at that point it’s a gamble what you replace.

I suppose you could try my readsb fork, i’ve just written some code that would hopefully restart readsb if the such a SDR freeze occurs.
But i don’t know if the changed code would actually mean it would start back up.
And really you typically want to fix such issues and not work around them.

If you want to experiment with that, you’ll have to start with Raspbian instead of the piaware image: Raspbian Lite: ADS B receiver · wiedehopf/adsb-wiki Wiki · GitHub
(just an option, i’m doubtful it would really help)

This one is better, 5.1 V, 3 A, by Raspberry PI Foundation. I am using it with Pi 4
NOT for PI 3 as it has USB-C connector

Well that would need an adapter or does that come in the box?

The Pi and the power supply have been working well since I set this up in January 2019 with the Pro Stick Plus. For now, I’m going to wait to see if the issue duplicates, and then get the log from dump1090 if it does.

There was no adapter in the box.
USB-C female to microUSB male adapter to be purchased separately for use with Pi 3 or Pi 2.

I believe the AJAX error can be caused by loss of your raspi internet connection.

Not likely, as the pi is hardwired to my network.

The AJAX message flashes momentarily every time I connect to tar1090 from another page such as graphs1090. IMO it is simply a timing issue.
