Details are sketchy right now, but a plane crashed near the runway at the Catalina airport, killing three people around 1:20 p.m. today. It was fully engulfed when helped arrived. No word yet on the type of plane or its reason for being there.
Small private planes go in and out of there all the time, and the runway is challenging, to say the least. A couple of DC-3’s go in and out on a daily basis, shuttling supplies back and forth from Catalina to KLGB.
