R.I.P :frowning:

Wow… that video is absolutely sickening.

As a pilot can you imagine your routine flight coming to that awful “Oh Sh!t” moment, and then continuing, probably in slow motion, until you’re trapped upside down in a burning ship? I assume the impact didn’t kill them and probably the smoke did. Nightmares for me tonight…

Godspeed Brothers.

That was exactly what I thought when I listened to the ATC the night of the CO DH8 in BUF. Listening to the FO it was all status quo, they had probably called in range, had a hotel van enroute. Same with this, the whole flight was probably routine and then all of a sudden!
It’s a good reminder of how quickly we can all be gone. If there’s any positive way to look at it, and hopefully this is true here, as with any other aviation accident, at very least, they went doing what they loved.

You could say that, but I was never really convinced that would make any difference to the guys that were going. Just helps the ones left behind deal with the loss, kind of like “they’re in a better place now”. Not many runway choices at NRT (RJAA) when the winds are blowing the wrong way. Very sad.

Let me just say I am praying for the families of the 2 crew in yesterdays accident. I came home from my shift late last night and read this thread, went over on a.net read all that, watched the video…and needless to say did not sleep well. I am not NTSB, or a safety expert in the area of MD-11 structure design…but I know it is a damn good aircraft. I have been amazed at some of the comments I’ve read from various sites on the net. One posting on a.net contained the following and I would LOVE to have someone substantiate or dismiss this claim:

*"Here is a comment I have copied over from another website (politics/news related) that may be of interest:
"Two bounces on takeoff does not account for a wind shear effect.

I think more was at play here. I work in air operations for a competitor. There is a dirty little secret in the industry that pilots who fly to and from Asia know and constantly worry about:

There are big problems in air cargo loading operations coming out of China where planes are routinely loaded incorrectly, deliberately overloaded. or miscalculations are made with regard to the total cargo payload onboard. Many times these weight and balance violations are not discovered until the planes arrive in the U.S. where a review of inbound payloads occur and the error is discovered.

Usually, the errors remain an issue that only requires internal disciplinary action by the carriers because there are no catastrophic consequence. However, if THIS catastrophe turns out to be the result of a combination of high velocity winds and an onboard “weight and balance” error, all hell will break out at the NTSB."*

Now I have never worked a ramp for FX in China, but I have here in the states and I am DAMN SURE that the checks and balances put in place to verify a load are iron clad. There is no way in hell this could be true, unless this information refers to some sort of fly by night cargo ops this surely isn’t FX, and I might even go as far as to say not at UPS either. Unless the container weights are just all flat out wrong, we have a set way of loading and documenting a flight and then verifying before doors close and push back occur. Bottom line of my rant is unless someone can bring a flight number as actual proof of this type of b.s. it doesn’t belong.

The bottom line here is 2 crew lost their lives, and a perfectly good MD-11 was lost. I am not going to for an instant pretend to know why based on a CCTV video that yes while telling, doesn’t really tell anything yet…that is up to the investigation.

Question, I looked up FDX080 in the Tracking section. This flight routing is China, NRT, ANC, IND. The portion from China to NRT doesn’t show up in the NRT arrivals, is this because the flight plan is filed in China as opposed to an FAA filed plan? I am guessing yes.

I guess that’s why you lock the cockpit door and don’t open it until everyone is off…

No, I’m the guy that has to deal with pax but doesn’t get to ride in the plane.

oh, well in that case…sorry. I’m not a cattle hauler anymore and can sympathize with you.

Did you take these? These plus the video, wow.

:open_mouth:

Thoughts are with the families.

Has the NTSB sent a team to NRT yet? I’ve seen no indication that there has been a launch from DCA or IAD. Also I keep checking MEM and don’t see anything heading in the direction of NRT. Any ideas?

NTSB press release said a GOTEAM departed yesterday.

NTSB SENDING INVESTIGATORS TO JAPAN
TO ASSIST IN FEDEX MD-11 CRASH

The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a team of investigators to Japan to assist in the investigation of the crash of a FedEx MD-11 at Narita International Airport.

Thank you for the 411.

Registration N526FE.

Sad events - tragic for the families concerned.

Maybe windshear or a microburst @ the threshold given the met conditions?

this gives a good idea of what the were going through before the crash:

long live the md-11 and fedex:

To answer your question IADFXMD11HVY no, they came from some news website in England.

To add here is a takeoff vid of this once proud bird: FedEx ♦ MD-11 ε MD-10 ~ Parallel Take-Off's - 18R ~ KMEM (Side by Side) - YouTube
