So this is a reach. Flame away if I’m out of place here. Looking for anyone in and out of ALB or SCH (either regularly or on a trip) that would be willing to allow someone (like me) to buy you a tank of gas (or close to it, I know 110LL isn’t cheap!) for a spin around the area.
Worked on my PP/SEL years ago and was unable to finish it. Would just love to go back up on occasion just to… go back up…
Breakfast/lunch or dinner is on me too.
Again, if this is out of place, I apologize ahead of time.
Be careful Jim. Offering to pay a PP to take you up when they weren’t already going that way, even by just paying for fuel, can be construed by the FAA as flying for hire.
Also, paying more than a fair share of direct expenses is a no-no.
Stuffing a pilot full of good food and suitable libations after the fact as a sign of gratitude is allowed.
Good point, JHEM. The FARs are explicit on how expenses can be shared by the private pilot. In short, it says the private pilot’s share of expenses cannot be less than the number of shares. If there are two people sharing expenses (the PP and a pax) then the pilot must give at least 1/2. If there are 2 pax then the pilot’s share must be at least 1/3, etc.
Thanks for the information. I didn’t know about that FAR but I am going to look into those websites.
FWIW, my logbook had 27 hrs in it when I stopped working on my PP/SEL. Combination of factors didn’t allow me to continue. I know about the discovery flights, but that’s just a tad dishonest in my book. I’m not going to start working on my license again (strike that, bought mega millions tickets today, so who knows). I was just curious about going up on occasion because… well, preaching to the choir here, there’s nothing like it.
Lastly… if any of you yeah-hoo’s ever do make it to ALB or SCH, let me know. Dinner is on me.
If you go to the local flight school and say you want to go up for a spin with a CFI I don’t understand why they wouldn’t do it at the normal costs. I would guess any local part 61 would do this… I can kinda see how a discovery flight would be considered dishonest as you mentioned in your other post.
If they charge you the normal rate for an hour of flight time with a CFI and it’s logged as flight instruction, legally and morally speaking it seems okay. (Unless I’m overlooking something here.)
