1090 here in the UK so nice and simple
Pete,
Did you get the GPS to work properly yet? I hope you did, if not, DON’T GIVE UP!!!
Bert…
Hi Bert
So we went away Saturday morning and am away
Till Tuesday. I did bring it with me.
Sadly it wouldn’t work in the sense of no live GPS update to the map for my location as we drove along the motorway (highway).
It does get a location on boot and that’s it.
I’m curious as to why you would not have the antenna located outside of the vehicle? On a side note, I used to work in the cable industry and we tried to utilize those 90 degree cable connectors to simplify bulk cable management. To our surprise we found that the 90 degree connectors were degrading our cable signal to such a degree that the signal level was dropping below acceptable performance levels and were severely impacting overall system performance. We had to painfully remove all such connectors to restore normal performance. Don’t know that is a problem with your connectivity but this is a heads-up to that experience.
That’s true about the 90 degree connectors. For your pictured setup, you are receiving a reasonably good number of airplanes.
Move your GPS dongle closer to the window of the car, so the GPS can “see” more GPS satellites. From the view in your setup, can you reverse everything? Scanner on the left, RPI, dongle, and GPS receiver all closer to the window. Moving the antenna closer to the window should improve your reception all around.
I don’t think Skyaware has to ability to change your map to reflect your location every time the GPS updates your position. That may happen in the future updates for Skyaware, as it is built for stationary receivers. Maybe a mobile configuration may be developed later. That may inspire more users to go mobile.
Maybe not, as users would be installing monitors in the vehicles, and creating a major safety problem!
Bert…
I had 3 mins from the wife saying yes to me taking it with me. I had to act quickly. I’m also not sure that at 80MOH said antenna would last.
The 90’s are pretty good but anything extra will always degrade the signal.
Trying to understand your thinking on:

“but anything extra will always degrade the signal.”
I read it to mean that the “90deg adapters are pretty good, but any extra item in the signal chain will always degrade the signal”
Any extra connections will reduce the signal
Hi Bert
Car had a panoramic roof so I had full signal through the glass roof window.
So after all of this then and as you said the skyware map doesn’t update on the move. So that defeats the object of the project.
Pete,
Don’t give up, keep trying. You may eventually find a map program that will interact with your setup. I’m glad you have your system working well, but hang in there, new things are invented everyday!!!
Bert…
@petewright2017 have you considered using readsb and tar1090?
Just chiming in here - I was successful in accomplishing this by:
- Enable SSH (by adding a file “ssh” to /boot)
- Enabling GPS in the piaware config
- Install GPS libraries using
sudo apt-get install gpsd
- Monitor GPS coords using
cgps -s
(had to move GPS to a better spot to get a proper fix) - Full reboot Raspberry Pi
Now my location is showing up as “Receiver” on the Flightaware page and I confirm on the map the dot is my exactly location. Woot!
But it doesn’t update as you move. Only static on cold boot.
