There’s nothing novel about women on the flight deck these days, but UAL/SkyWest 6732, KMRY-KDEN on 7/21/09 had a completely female crew - left and right seats and both cabin attendants. That was a passenger first for me. (I fly a lot less now than in the past.) While briefly out of the cockpit, the pilot explained to me - with a nice touch of humor - the CR 7’s intelligent throttle system that automatically controls engine thrust during ascent. On approach to KDEN, “Capt. Deb” thanked her passengers for being aboard this “unmanned flight.” That drew an appreciative chuckle from the cabin. She then iced the cake with a skillful crosswind crab landing.
How common are all-female crews on the airlines nowadays?
I don’t know how common all-female flight crews are, but it seems like all-male cabin crews are increasing in popularity. Twice on Delta flights earlier this spring we had all-male Flight Attendants. Or all male stewardesses I personally wouldn’t say no if offered a job as a flight attendant as it’s probably the cheapest way to spend time on planes. A big “way to go” to all the female pilots out there.
In regards to the flight deck crew… I wouldn’t say it is “common” based on the ratio of female vs. male pilots. However, I wouldn’t say that it is uncommon either.
One of my former coworkers in the Air Force who now flies for Southwest put some pictures online of her first “unmanned” flight. The cockpit and cabin crew were all females.
I’d provide a link but I’m a pilot and therefore have other things more important to due, but…
AIN published a news post some time last spring, early summer that showed a commuter that supposedly had the first all black-female crew.
There is mechanic in my hangar who is a bit less than progressive with his social thoughts. I cut out the article and glued it to his Snap-On tool box & then sprayed a nice clear lacquer over it. 8) . He is still a bit mad at me.
EDIT:
Here is a link. Not the AIN article but same story.
“I have this freind” that keeps getting this recurring dream that he’s on-board an all female crew. Both up front in the office and attendants. Theyre all wearing victoria secrets attire. Complete with hi-heels and lace, and he’s the only pax!..I just thought I’d share that.
