Why Does United Airlines Use A B772 for SFO-LAX?

I have been wondering about this for a long time, and I think it is safe to ask and debate. Why has United Airlines been using their fleet of Boeing 777-200s from SFO to LAX? Is this for more passenger and baggage accommodation, saving fuel etc? And how long has this been going on?

Looks like they use the 777 once a week so it is probably a positioning flight to or from maintenance.

Yes, it’s for repositioning/maintenance. UA has significantly more maintenance capabilities (especially for widebodies) at SFO than they do at LAX yet LAX does has several 777 flights so that’s probably why the plane is sent down every week.

That being said, it’s such a big route for United that today’s flight was mostly full, so UA can fill the plane when they have to.

Yeah, this happens with a lot of airlines. I think this happens with United in some other cases as well, like Chicago and even Denver.
