I have been using dump1p90-mutability for a long time, but I am now seriously considering shifting to dump1090-fa. Reason: The plane icons on map of dump1090-mutability have been growing bigger since last some months, and by now some have grown ackwardly big.

The plane icons on dump1090-fa map are decently sized.

It is easy to build your own up to date DB based on local stuff, I have done that here in Auckland New Zealand and now only get 1 or 2 triangles a day.

Not sure if that file will work with mutability, haven’t tested it. Was more an example of how stuff is coded rather than a drop and replace… Individual mileage may vary on that approach!

Fire it up in a new browser in private mode (incognito in Chrome, you might want to change the default icon though, I use a triangle as they stand out when something is missing from my DB. Just refreshed the link above with the new markers.js, more tweaks, and the new Airbuses that I will be posting here shortly.

Updated to the latest file and all looks good (I edited the file to keep the default icon). When I have time, I’ll switch back to the triangle and help pickup missing types as I am on a couple major airways.

Thanks for the heads up, although it looks like I’ve got some aircraft that the FA export in dump1090-fa doesn’t. Do you have plans to port that to dump1090-mutability at some point?

MD11 is on my to do list already, Fedex has them down this way too.

I am using the JSON DB for ICAO mapping here, it’s the DB file under HTML, there is s script you can use to add to this DB or rebuild from scratch csv-to-json.py. There is also a sample CSV file there you can add to if you want all the entries, I started with that as a base but removed most of the stuff I figure will never show up down here.
Usage on PiAware 3.1.0 is
sudo python csv-to-json.py vrs.csv db
Where vrs.csv is the source file and db is the directory location for the DB.

I have an Excel spreadsheet I am recording tail numbers, types and ICAO’s I use this to generate the CSV:

I copy the output row and paste it into a text file, works fine as long as the first line is: icao24,r,t

The DB is pretty sticky though from a browser cache perspective, when testing a new DB I run up a new session in Incognito in Chrome to make sure nothing is cached.

Great news on the MD-11. That vrs.csv file is the same that’s included in dump1090-mutability, and I’m using it as a base that I’m adding to using the csv-to-json.py script. Looking at github.com/flightaware/dump1090 … ic_html/db, it appears that dump1090-fa has a mass export from FlightAware’s database that isn’t reflected in vrs.csv.

To avoid hijacking this thread too much, I’ve spun off my FAA registry approach into a new thread.
