RTL-SDR Blog V4 Dongle released

For those waiting for something new, RTLSDR blog has announced the new V4 receiver.

It’s interesting to see what has changed (and why) as well as what has not changed.

I won’t list the details, but a very brief summery is that it’s a better general coverage receiver, but for ADSB, the V3 is still probably better.
Fortunately the V4 isn’t a replacement for the V3 as they are both continue to be available.

thanks for the heads-up, you are right, it doesn’t look like it is an improvement for ADS-B when reading the description.

This isn’t something I’d use for ADS-B. It’s too generic.

I think I know what you mean, but the same can be said for the V3.
Once the V3 is coupled to its complementary filter/amp, it’s way above average.

I got one of these (Nooelec RTL-SDR v5 SDR) for something unrelated to ADSB. Should it perform better than a trusty FA dongle? I have a blue dongle in my station now and seems to work well but like everyone - always looking to improve numbers. I do have an FA filter that could be fitted to as well.

True, very true.

I got sent one of the SAWBIRD ADSB LNA’s from Nooelec. I’ve not tried it yet but there is a production issue on the screen print.

It has lower sensitivity at 1090MHz than the V3:

But it has way better rejection of out of band signals:

I’d be interested to see how it performs since this it the first non R820/R860 dongle that’s been available for a while. It might be a good option if there are strong out of band signals which would normally need heavily filtering and you don’t want to go to the extra cost of a filter/lna.
