RE: Want to test new mapping features? Try out the beta.

David just announced the new Beta mapping abilities of FlightAware!
Thanks guys!!!

One thing I just found…
When I am viewing all airborne aircraft of a specific type, say P180s, and I wish to view a different a/c type, putting the new a/c type in the search field on that page (say, PC12s) brings up the “old” listings-only page for that a/c type, minus the map. Only when I start by looking up a specific n-number and clicking on the aircraft type will it bring up the “new” page with the map. (changing the last part of the address in the address bar in my browser does work though. By the way, the aircraft type in the address bar is case-sensitive. …aircrafttype/B73* works, …aircrafttype/b73* doesnt.)
Just noticed that the beta site still lists VNR as “Wanair” while the normal site lists it appropriately as “avantair”. Weird, looking up the same flight in the beta site and the normal site are different.

Weird, OK, looking into this.

Yeah, the fleet stuff doesn’t expect a manually formed URL although it could I suppose.

Fixed.

Yes

Believe this is fixed.

Just played with it for a bit and it seems cool. Thanks for all your hard work to make this the best aviation site.

Thanks for all the improvements. I look forward to the pan and zoom.

The fleet map is a really nice addition.

Please give us all advance notice when you have your first public offering.

Thanks Man! Keep up the good work!

…so when’s the new zoom/pan feature coming out!? :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

Hi Folks. Thanks to everyone who’s been participating in the beta program.

The beta has turned up a couple of problems. You may have noticed that we get a lot of broken links for maps on the beta site. This is due to a software failure in the map generation library that is a bit mysterious and tricky to debug. We are, of course, rather deeply engaged in solving that mystery.

A couple other problems have turned up that need to be nicked before we can roll all this into production.

And that’s what betas are all about.

It can be hard to predict how long it will take to find and fix a bug, but hopefully in the next couple of days we’ll get the new maps generating reliably at the 99% level or above and, shortly thereafter, roll it out.
